After some research the cause of this "hoax" was pretty clear. At least imho it's THIS ( The Postillion ) article. Obviuosly some users took this gag a bit too seriously.

Whatsapp down. As to read on several sites (Augsburger) the Whatsapp services are down. My personal guess would be that the reasons for that might rest within the Facebook overtake. Whatever. I'm going to switch to Threema (as many other users) for now anyway and wait for better or smarter alternatives. Nothing personal Whatsapp. You did well. But I don't like the idea of Zuck having full control of my smartphone... :>
